THE HIVE | OAKLAND, CA
The Hive is a living, working, eating, shopping, and gathering space in the heart of uptown Oakland that was converted by Signature Development from a series of abandoned auto showrooms to an edgy urban neighborhood. Central to this mixed-use development is a courtyard that became the perfect location to add two local, emerging retail brands — Red Bay Coffee and Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream.
This targeted, urban infill project provides residents, office workers, and visitors the opportunity to gather together and enjoy coffee, ice cream, and a game of chess. Using shipping containers not only fit the urban feel of the project but by being built in a factory, disruption to the site’s residents and workers was minimized. Red Bay Coffee was up and running within a week of the container delivery and later Humphry Slocombe was added without the surrounding businesses missing a beat.
